Bret Gilliam
The 2019 impact of Covid, with its subsequent lockdowns and event cancelations, encouraged on-line ‘catch-ups’ and Zoom presentations and talks. One of those so affected, was Singapore’s annual ADEX Show – a regional dive event that, since its inception in 1995, had grown to become a regional dive event without equal.
Following the initial postponement and then cancellation of its 2020 Singapore Show, the ADEX organisers launched a series of regular Zoom webinars devoted to various aspects of diving.
Invited to run a series of ‘Fireside Chats’ with diving personalities, I thoroughly welcomed and enjoyed the opportunity to chat – and look into the lives – of some of modern diving’s most influential and personable characters.
Many of the links – and the sessions themselves – may be a little jaded, but having looked back on some of those talks, I’m rather proud to have known so many outstanding people.
In 2021, I conducted an on-line conversation with one of modern diving – and modern diving history’s – most influential (and, some would say, controversial) figures, the late, Bret Gilliam, a person who, for more than fifty years, was professionally involved in the diving and maritime industries.
With a wealth of experience in military, commercial, scientific, recreational and technical aspects of the diving world, and whose business interests extended to include all sectors of the industry – including founding TDI (Technical Diving International) the world’s second largest training organisation – Bret Gilliam was a true renaissance man; one who has had a profound influence on recreational and exploration diving.
Hopefully, you enjoy listening to this delightful character and his arsenal of interesting diving stories and anecdotes.
